Black Hills ~ South Dakota

Join us this summer as we take a little virtual road trip, visiting some fun spots across North America!

This week, Allison of Tips for Family Trips takes us on a road trip through the Black Hills of South Dakota. After reading this post, I want to go now!!!
The Black Hills of South Dakota is one of the great American road trips. The iconic Mount Rushmore is the crown jewel of any visit to this spectacular part of the United States, but many people do not realize how much more there is to do there. Whether you love history, nature, or kitschy tourist traps, the Black Hills have something for you.

Here are the ten best Black Hills attractions to visit after you've seen Mount Rushmore.

1. Crazy Horse Memorial This work-in-progress is a gigantic and impressive tribute to another American legend. The mission of Crazy Horse Memorial is to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians. Work on this monument, the world's largest mountain carving, has been ongoing since 1948 and relies on admissions and private donations to continue. There is also a museum and cultural center on site.

  Cave Popcorn - Jewel Cave

2. Caves
Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument sprawl underneath the Black Hills. Despite their proximity, the two offer different experiences and cave lovers will want to see both. Visitors to Wind Cave will see one of the best displays of boxwork in the world. The walls of Jewel Cave sparkle, and visitors are treated to formations such as cave bacon and cave popcorn.

 3. Custer State Park Drive the wildlife loop in Custer State Park for a chance to see elk, bison, deer, big horn sheep and prairie dogs. It's hard to miss the park's famous begging burros on this drive. These wild burros stand near the road waiting for treats from tourists. Bring a bag of carrots or apples and keep the camera ready. Needles Highway to Sylvan Lake and Iron Mountain Highway are both excellent scenic drives.

Badlands National Park

4. Badlands National Park Badlands National Park is about an hour's drive east of Rapid City. In Badlands, a colorful and rugged landscape seems to grow right out of the prairie. The park is also the source of many preshistoric fossils, including a saber-toothed cat fossil. Keep your eyes open for living animals too, such as the adorable and endangered prairie dog.

5. Wall Drug If you go to Badlands, stop by Wall Drug in nearby Wall, S.D. Wall Drug is the kitschiest, craziest collection of gift shops, photo ops and curiosities you may ever see. Be sure to visit the animatronic T-Rex, take photos of your kids astride the giant jackalope, buy souveniers and top it off with an ice cream cone from the soda fountain.

Reptile Gardens
6. Reptile Gardens The Reptile Gardens boasts a collection of over 225 species of reptiles. Hug a giant tortoise, see a rare kimodo dragon and get a close-up look at exotic venomous snakes. Be sure to ask for a vacation pass when you purchase admission. It will allow you to return as often as you want during your stay in the Black Hills.

Playful Cubs at Bear Country U.S.A.
7. Bear Country U.S.A. There are many chances to see wildlife in the Black Hills, but if you want a slam dunk, visit Bear Country U.S.A. Drive through a 250-acre loop to see elk, reindeer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bison, bobcats, cougars and black bears roaming freely around your car in their own enclosures. Afterward, park and walk around Babyland to see grizzly bears and small mammals, such as foxes, badgers and skunks, and a whole yard of playful baby bear cubs. Go early in the day to avoid crowds and see the animals at your own speed.

Mammoth Site
8. Mammoth Site The Mammoth Site is located about 60 miles south of Rapid City in the city of Hot Springs. The paleontological dig site was discovered in 1974 and now houses a museum where studies are still being conducted. It is the largest Colombian mammoth exhibit in the world, and the 30-minute tour and additional exhibits are worthwhile.
View of Deadwood from Boot Hill
 9. Deadwood There isn't a lot for kids to do in Deadwood, but fans of the Old West will not want to miss this legendary town. Drive up to Boot Hill Cemetery, where Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane and other colorful characters are buried, and enjoy a view of the town and its mountain setting. Downtown Deadwood offers a string of quaint hotels, shops and casinos.

10. Rapid City Rapid City is the largest city in the Black Hills and with its large variety of lodging, restaurants and other services, is a good base for a Black Hills vacation. Downtown Rapid City is walkable and filled with unique shops and restaurants. There is a life-size bronze statue of a U.S. president on every corner.
Storybook Island

A couple of miles away, Storybook Island is the best free play park I've ever seen for children under age 12. The Dinosaur Park is a collection of concrete dinosaurs, painted green, that stand high on a hill in the middle of Rapid City. The dinosaur statues are corny, but kids can climb on them, the park is free and the hill provides a nice overlook of the city. The Black Hills is a genuine American experience and an outstanding family vacation destination.

Yes! You can take a Toddler to Schlitterbahn!

Schlitterbahn in New Braunfles - BIG waterpark, but is it a place you'd want to take your little ones???

YES!!!

I hemmed and hawed over this one - I have 2 olders (11 & 9) who have been begging me to take them. I also have a strong-willed 3 year old who is very adventurous, so I thought we'd give it a try.

I am so glad we did! Here's why:
Schlitterbahn has four separate parks to play in - The Original, Surfenburg, Blastenoff, & Tubenbach - and all of them have amazing toddler water play areas.

We started out in the Original Park.  Shaded with lots of trees, most of the toddler areas stay out of the sun for the better part of the day.
The Original Park has fun water play areas with oversized animals to crawl and slide down.
Also, Schatze's Central Park is located here.  This is a cute area set up with several slides, water jets, and play areas.  The water level is very low here, so this is a great place to cool off and play with beginning walkers.
It was also a perfect place to "break" my 3 year old in, as this was his first trip to a water park.  He played in this area for a while before we ventured to the bigger slides with water.
Another great play area for toddlers is at Surfenburg - The pirate ship & submarine was a favorite with my guy - lots of tunnels, slides, and fun water contraptions that kept my toddler amused for hours. The water is a bit deeper in this area, so you would want to grab a life jacket (provided by Schlitterbahn) if your little ones are not steady in water.
Schlitterbahn has child-size tubes with bottoms so that you can take little ones on some of the tame water rides - the Hillside Chutes was a favorite of his, as you drift along encountering a slide every once and a while. He screamed his way down some of the chutes (they were tame) and giggle as he was at the bottom.
Towards the afternoon, we were able to "graduate" my little one to this fun water play area. This playhouse has rope ladders, tunnels, and climbing areas that have water spraying in every which way.  The back side of the playhouse has fun, but gentle, water slides to go down.  And beware of the tipping ship at the top.....it just might get you soaked if you time it just right!
Schlitterbahn really does a great job at providing fun for every age. My older kids were able to play on all the rides and slides they wanted in the parks we were in as my toddler loved running and splashing through his area.  It was ideal for our family and as you can see, wore my little guy out!

Before you go, check out my Top Ten Reasons to go to Schlitterbahn this summer post.

Top 10 Reasons to Go to Schlitterbahn ~ New Braunfels, TX

Schlitterbahn.....what?? If you google it, the word translates to "slide" or "slippery road" in German.  Either one fits this FUN water park down in New Braunfels, Texas. Continuously on the "World's Best Water Parks list" and the largest water park in Texas, Schlitterbahn does not disappoint!

Being that we have been twice in the first 3 weeks of summer break, we love Schlitterbahn, but for those sititing on the fence, here are 10 easy reasons why you should go this summer!

1. One admission price and NOTHING ELSE - no parking fees, free buses to other parks, use life jackets & tubes all day for no fee, and, my favorite....bring all the food you want!  Seriously, pack your cooler with lunch, snacks, and more (minus glass bottles and alcohol).  Park your stuff, lay out your table cloth and eat when you want.
2. Four Separate Parks - We love that between the 4 areas of Schlitterbahn (Tubenbach, Surfenburg, Blastenoff, and the Original Schlitterbahn), there is fun for everyone.  I personally love all the long tube rides under the shade trees at the Original, while my kids love the thrill rides at Blastenoff.

Plus we feel that because there is so much to offer guests at 4 locations, it tends to thin the crowds out a bit.
3. Park Your Stuff & Go.  I know I already told ya that one, but seriously, pick a spot everyone remembers, lay out your towels and go play. There are locker rentals for valuables, but we never use one.  We feel that comfortable.
4. This cool new ride.  The Falls is so fun!  It's long and takes you from one park to another and back around. Best part?  There is NO line to wait to get on and multiple places to get on and off - I would have gone round and round all day if my kids would have let me......
5. Long rides with no lines.  My favorite kind.  No lie, my kid waited an hour to ride one quick ride, but that was his choice and he felt it was "worth it".  But this momma doesn't want to wait in lines all day for rides that last less than one minute, so I enjoy all the long tube rides that are scattered through out the park.  Hop on & off The Falls, go round & round the lazy river, or tube down the Hillside and into the Comal River at the Original - there is no line!
6. Friendly, Friendly Staff - From the Lifeguards helping push you around the tube rides to the guest services representative helping you find your pair of Maui Jims after you stupidly wore them on an water ride (hello?), everyone we encounter was extremely helpful and nice.  BTW, I received a phone call the next morning that they found my sunglasses at the bottom of a pool and they mailed them to me free of charge!!
7. COLD Natural Spring Water - A BIG reason why I love the Original Park so much is the water is so refreshing and cold!  In our HOT Texas summer, you want cold.  Trust me.
8. Thrill rides to excite your Olders.  Every park has different rides to make your pouty tween smile and thank you for taking them here!!
9. Perfectly tame water fun for the Youngers.  Everyone of the four parks have fantastic play areas for the little ones.  I was very doubtful about taking my 3 year old and was so pleasantly surprised at how much there was for him to do! Moms of little ones - come back tomorrow, as I'll tell you why you should take your wee ones to Schlitterbahn too!
10. You look like a hero to your kids! 'Nuff said!

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch ~ San Antonio, TX

Last week, we got to do something we have been wanting to do for awhile - feed "wild" animals from our car!!! I have not done this since I was a kid, and my kids couldn't understand the concept of driving around to see all the animals, so we loaded up and drove on down to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch south of New Braunfels, Texas.
We picked going on a Tuesday, to try to beat the weekend crowds and it was perfect - not too many cars - so we took our time, meandering through the 4 mile drive.

I loved the fact that the Ranch is located in the Hill Country, with tons of shade trees, yet the landscape can make you feel like you are on an African Safari.
We had our Adventure Guide Book, 3 bags of feed, and our cameras - we were ready!

The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch cares for more than 500 animals of 40 exotic, native & endangered species, including rhinoceros, buffalo, giraffes, and zebras.
We slowly drove through.  Each of my kids had a window for maximum viewing...and feeding!
And these animals KNOW what a car means...FOOD!  This Aoudad we encountered at the beginning of our drive couldn't get to us fast enough, and knew exactly what he wanted, even sticking his head in for more!  We had more fun feeding these gentle guys!
About half-way through the drive we come across this warning sign, but as we drove toward the zebras, they didn't seem to want to have anything to do with us........
Until we went around the curve and then they ventured closer.....and closer.....and closer! This guy reached right in and licked my steering wheel.  I'm guessing it was his polite way of asking for a snack! These guys were incredibly friendly, but we did as we were told and dropped the feed on the ground.  They are such beautiful animals, we were just in awe of how close we were able to get to them.
Eventually, we became braver, holding our hands out flat to allow the gorgeous Kudu to eat our of our hand.....and get a handful of saliva - YUCK - (make sure you have antibacterial hand wash for after the safari handy!).  We even held the bag out for the Ostriches and Emus to eat out of.  It was so fun!

You are allowed to drive through as many times as you want with your admission.  We had arrived around 10 and it took us about an hour to drive through, so we decided to go again.  We had so much fun with the zebras, that we wanted to see them again!  Besides, there was another road you could choose that was a shorter distance with the opportunity to see new animals.

By the time we got back around to the zebras, all but one had disappeared!  It was 11:30 am and the sun was out in full force, so we assumed they headed for shade.  We still had a great time feeding the llamas and emus at the end of the drive, but a great reason why heading to the ranch earlier is better.
The Ranch's Visitor's Center has an exceptional Petting Barnyard to get up close to farm animals - feed them, pet them, scratch their bellies and they will love you forever.  The Lemur Island, a habitat mimicking Madagascar, is fun to watch the lemurs swinging around.

There is a fun gift shop and a fantastic Safari Camp Grill - we stopped and had great salads and burgers for lunch.
We really enjoyed our time at the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch - it was incredible seeing all these animals so close.  We learned all about different species we had never head of before and laughed as they "asked" for more food. It really was a wonderful morning spent with the family.
But it was the curious faces of wonderment that I captured and enjoyed the most!

If you are in the area, take the time to enjoy the Natural Bridge Caverns, located right next door.  These caverns are one of the best in the state!

Texas Travel Facts for Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch:
Location: 26515 Natural Bridge Caverns Road, San Antonio, TX
Hours: Daily: 9 am with seasonal closing times (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Christmas Day)
Admission: Adults (12 & up): $17.50  Children (3-11): $9.00
Recommended Time: 2 -3 hours
Good to know: You are out in the hill country, so bring snacks or lunch, or enjoy the Safari Grill; bring napkins, babywipes, or handi-wipes to clean hands; take your time - don't feel rushed by cars behind you - we pulled over several times to allow other cars to move ahead that wanted to

My family and I were invited to visit the ranch and were provided admission. I was not financially compensated for this post.  All opinions of the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch are strictly my own based on my experience.

The Quarry Splash Pad ~ Georgetown, TX

There are so many GREAT Splash Pads around the Austin area! But this one really rivals them all! The Quarry Splash Pad, located in the Southwest Williamson Regional County Park in Leander, is a refreshing outing for all ages.
It just opened last June (2011), so it is in great shape with jets of water spraying you everywhere you go.  Parents, word of warning, do not expect to follow your kiddos around and NOT get wet!
Most of the kids enjoy the slide, which is not very slippery, so even the young ones can enjoy it.
We liked hanging out in the partially-shaded sandpit. If you do get covered in sand, there are showers to rinse you off available.

It is much bigger than your typical square splash pad.  With 3 specific play areas, it can be a bit tricky to keep an eye on multiple children.  There is a great deal of shaded pavilions with lots of picnic tables, so it makes for a fun lunch date too. A snack bar is open most days too.
There is a small fee for admittance ($1 in an honor system cash machine), but it is well-spent to spend an hour or so cooling off from the brutal Texas heat!

Texas Travel Facts for the Quarry Splash Pad:
Location: 3005 County Rd 175 Leander, Tx (off Hwy 1431)
Hours: Daily: 10 am - 7 pm
Admission: Adults: $1.00 - Automated machine takes cash only and does give change
Recommended Time: 1-2 hours
Good to know: Bring snacks, towels, and sunscreen; only certain types of chairs can be used on the grass turf

Legoland Sea Life Aquarium ~ San Diego, CA

Join us this summer as we take a little virtual road trip, visiting some fun spots across North America!

Heading on over to Southern California on our Virtual Road Trip today.  One of my sweet friends, Emmy, (whom I had the pleasure of meeting last month) does some amazing things with her kiddos and she offered to tell us all about the Legoland Sea Life Aquarium in San Diego after she visited last month.

My kids finished school on a Tuesday in mid May.  We thought we would surprise them with a trip to Legoland, California.  Thankfully we decided to look at the opening times before we told them only to discover that Legoland is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the slow seasons.   Instead we went to the Sea Life Aquarium which is literally next door and affiliated with Legoland.

As I said this is literally next to Legoland- you buy your tickets at the Legoland park kiosks.  Since we went on a day that Legoland was closed, it was easy to park and parking was free.  If you are going on a day that Legoland is open, I definitely recommend buying your tickets online ahead of time so you do not have to wait at the Legoland booths.

You begin by entering a room where they show you a quick video about the aquarium and the doors open to reveal a bridge and slide the kids can play on.  So of course all the kids want to play.  They stagger how many people they let it, but I could see this getting pretty backed up on crowded days.

The entire aquarium is basically one big loop- so you don't have to worry about missing anything and just follow it around. It is all rather dark (not in a scary way though) almost giving it an ocean like feel throughout.

The displays are low enough for even my toddler to see or had steps you could step up on to see.  It was definitely very kid friendly.
Low toddler friendly displays
A lot of the displays the glass was con-caved in such a way that it seriously looked like the fish could just swim right out to you, it really was amazing and fascinating to look at.

My favorite part was the long tunnel under and through the giant tank.  This tank was filled with so many sharks, string rays and fish and they literally were swimming right over your head and right next to you, it was awesome!
In the tunnel surrounded by tons of sharks
A shark swimming right over my head in tunnel
There was also two different areas where you could touch some sea creatures like star fish and a sea cucumber.

And since it is a Legoland Aquarium there were a few Lego friends in the tanks and on display.
In the big tank with all the sharks
You end the loop right in the cafe where we ate a yummy but very pricey lunch ($8.95 for kids meals).

We saw the entire aquarium in a little more than two hours.  So for the time we spent it is a little pricy, however you can buy tickets as part of a hopper pass with Legoland (when it is open of course).  But I think I definitely would recommend going here on a day that Legoland is not open.  Not only is parking much easier but the aquarium would feel very claustrophobic and you might feel rushed and pushed along if it was busy.

Hours: Open vary depending on season but approx 10-5 daily
Cost: $20 for adults; $15 for kids 3-12; Under 3 free

And if you are thinking about traveling to any Southern California attractions this summer, check out this awesome deal from CityPass that I can offer my readers: Free 3-Day Shipping for Southern California CityPass, includes Disneyland, SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo and Universal Studios.

Have you ever been to the Sea Life Aquarium?
